This essay stages a critical conversation between Stuart Hall and Ernesto Laclau, comparing their different appropriations of Antonio Gramsci’s theory hegemony. In the 1980s, Laclau engaged with Gramsci one another in order to conceptualize what they regarded as triangular relation rise Thatcherism, crisis Left, emergence new social movements. While many readers emphasize undeniable similarities mutual influences that exist this focuses on differences theories hegemony locates starkest contrast them at level theoretical practice. main lesson drew from was privileging conjunctural analysis, proceeded locate concept higher abstraction, developing political ontology increasingly indifferent any specific conjuncture.
